CPS (College of Physicians and Surgeons) was established in 1912. Surgeon General Sir H. W. Stevenson came up with this study idea. He was a meritorious doctor of Allopathy. CPS was empowered by the Indian Medical Degree Act 1916 and is one of the oldest post-graduate degrees in the medical field.
CPS was firstly recognized by the Medical Council of India. Then it was de-recognized by MCI. After several debates and approval, 6 FCPS Specializations which are a 3 year course & 3 Two year Diploma courses got recognition from The National Medical Council in the year 2018.

A student desirous of joining a Post-Graduate Course must have obtained a basic qualification of MBBS or its equivalent qualification recognized by the Medical Council of India for the purpose of First Schedule Second Schedule or Third Schedule of the IMC Act 1956 as amended from time to time.
All the students who have passed MCI recognized MBBS examination held by any of the recognized universities or have obtained a qualification mentioned in the above paragraph and are seeking admission into CPS affiliated institution for the purpose of the Certificate Course / Diploma / Fellowship of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Mumbai must provide themselves with Certificate of Eligibility from this College at the time of applying for enrolment as Post-Graduate students.
Candidates must hold Permanent Registration with the Maharashtra Medical Council or the State Medical Council where the CPS courses are recognized prior to enrolment.
CPS Fellowships & Diploma Courses are notified by Government of Maharashtra vide notification no. MMC/1096/111/96/Act and vide GR Extraordinary 4-B through notification no. PGM.1010/CR-18 (Part 2)/10/EDU-2 and in the Maharashtra Medical Council Act 1965.
Government of Gujarat has recognized all the Fellowships and Diplomas of CPS to strengthen the infrastructure of the medical fraternity in the state of Gujarat vide Gujarat Government Gazette no. GP-17-MCG-102011-2213-J dated 14th October 2011 notified by Health & Family Welfare Department, Government of Gujarat under the Gujarat Acts. CPS courses are recognized in the State of Rajasthan, Union Territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli.

Medical Colleges, Corporation Medical Institutions, Medical Colleges under Deemed Universities recognized by UGC, Private Medical Colleges are inspected, approved and affiliated to CPS for training post graduate specialists (Fellowships/Diplomas) in the state of Maharashtra.
More than 20 institutions on similar grounds have been affiliated to CPS from Gujarat to conduct CPS PG training programs.
